Collection Details

Nyoni is the second kimono collection designed by Uber Dandy Kimono. We’re given futuristic kimono with the yukata while, once again, using African wax prints. With these vibrant and lively colours, these outfits are for Spring 2020.

Collection Focus

In addition to being designed for Spring’s animated and fresh nature, the collection is focusing on the concept of being creatively free. Furthermore, to increase emphasis on the thread of freedom, the collective is titled Nyoni. This means bird in several Bantu languages. Through this Spring compilation, we are shown how UDK wishes to be free creatively while also applying traditional and modern styling.

The African wax prints chosen for new designs bring new as well as vibrant patterns and motifs to the baseline of kitsuke. Dynamic graphics on the yukata fabric are reminding us of Spring. Meanwhile, UDK is styling the yukata with popping, contrasting colours. These echo those of the futuristic 1980s fashion trends we once saw and have seen again recently in fashion. The colours push past the primary colours of the first collection in order to grant us a more ‘out of this world’ space appeal.

Along side this intergalactic vibe, we are shown how the kimono are being worn in the ‘otoko’ style which blurs the gender binary. Through the use of androgynous styling, UDK aims to once again bring kitsuke to the 21st Century. A crisp and contemporary take on the classic cotton yukata with UDK’s signature eclectric styling. This collection is a great visual aid and inspiration for those new to kitsuke items and musubi. Even those more experienced will find new ways of expressing their kimono style. Futuristic kimono for the creatively free kitsuke.
